Frequently Asked Questions

  • What plastering supplies do I need to start a basic plastering job?

For most plastering jobs, you'll need a selection of essential supplies: plaster compound, joint tape, plasterboard screws, corner beads, and sanding materials. Adhesive is also important for securing plasterboard sheets. Depending on the scope of the job, you may also need backing blocks, cutting blades, dust masks, and drop sheets. Having these items on hand from the beginning saves time and helps maintain a smooth workflow.

  • What type of tape should I use for plasterboard joints?

The two most common types are paper joint tape and fibreglass mesh tape. Paper tape is strong and creates a smooth finish when embedded with compound, making it a favourite for professional work. Mesh tape is self-adhesive and easier to use for beginners, though it may be slightly more prone to cracking if not applied properly. For high-stress areas or corners, paper tape is usually the more durable option.

  • Are metal or plastic corner beads better?

Both have their benefits. Metal corner beads are strong and provide sharp, clean edges, which is ideal for high-traffic areas where durability matters. Plastic corner beads, including PVC options, are rust-resistant and flexible, making them perfect for damp areas or curved walls. The choice depends on your specific project needs, but either option helps protect corners from damage and ensures a crisp finish.

  • What grit sandpaper should I use for plastering?

For sanding joint compound or plaster, start with 120–150 grit for initial smoothing, then move to 180–220 grit for final finishing. Using finer grit reduces the chance of gouging or scratching the surface before painting. If you’re using a power sander, make sure to match the grit to the tool’s recommendations and always sand in a well-ventilated area or use dust extraction where possible.
