Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between base coat and top coat plaster compounds?
Base coat compounds are designed for the first stage of jointing, offering strong adhesion and excellent filling capabilities. They are typically thicker and more durable, making them ideal for embedding tape and filling gaps between plasterboard sheets. Top coat (or finishing) compounds are applied over the base layer to create a smooth, seamless finish. They are finer, easier to sand, and provide the surface that will be painted or textured. Using both in the correct order ensures a strong and visually clean result.
Should I use a pre-mixed or powder compound?
Pre-mixed compounds are ready to use straight from the bucket, making them convenient and consistent in texture—ideal for smaller jobs or quick repairs. Powder compounds, often referred to as setting compounds, are mixed with water and offer faster drying times and stronger bonding. They're commonly used for larger jobs or when multiple coats are applied in a short time. While pre-mixed is easier for beginners, powder gives professionals more control over working time and finish quality.
Why is my plaster compound cracking or shrinking?
Cracking or shrinkage can be caused by a few things—applying the compound too thickly, using the wrong product for the job, or allowing it to dry too quickly in hot or windy conditions. Base coats are designed to handle more volume, while finish coats should be applied thinly and evenly. Always follow the manufacturer’s drying time guidelines and apply multiple thinner coats if needed. Cracking can also be minimized by ensuring surfaces are properly prepped and clean before application
How long should plaster compound dry before sanding or painting?
Drying time depends on the type of compound used and environmental factors like humidity and airflow. Pre-mixed compounds may take 12–24 hours to fully dry, while setting-type compounds can dry in as little as 20–90 minutes, depending on the formula. Always check that the surface is completely dry to the touch and free of soft spots before sanding or applying paint. Rushing this step can lead to bubbling, peeling, or an uneven finish down the line.
